Absolute plant biomass of annual grasses tended to be higher than that of perennial species after 10 days of growth. Variation in caryopses size has an impact on seedling quality by enhancing leaf area and root length in seedlings derived from huge caryopses. C. virgata and T. berteronianus were very responsive to increased soil nutrients, without severely affecting the allocation pattern to reproductive organs. In the vegetative phase leaf weight ratio was similar in annual and perennial grasses, but strongly decreased in annuals during the reproductive phase. Growth parameters such as LAR, NAR and RGR were not related to the estimated high and low fodder value of the grasses. The size structure of experimental and field populations of most grass species was L-shaped (positive skewness) al time of fruiting, except that of Set ria verticillata which maintained a normal distribution throughout the life cycle.</style>
<work-type><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Article</style></work-type><accession-num><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">ISI:A1992HU55900012</style></accession-num><notes><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">ISI Document Delivery No.: HU559Times Cited: 2Cited Reference Count: 26Cited References: BOORMAN LA, 1982, J ECOL, V70, P607 CHAPMAN SB, 1976, METHODS PLANT ECOLOG CLAYTON WD, 1973, KEW B, V28, P37 ERNST WHO, 1981, FLORA, V171, P387 ERNST WHO, 1983, J ECOL, V71, P197 ERNST WHO, 1985, VEGETATIO, V62, P533 ERNST WHO, 1988, FLORA, V181, P243 ERNST WHO, 1989, MINERAL NUTR TROPICA, P97 FIELD D, 1976, HDB COMMON GRASSES B FLADUNG M, 1987, J PLANT PHYSL, V130, P467 FORD ED, 1975, J ECOL, V63, P311 GRIME JP, 1979, PLANT STRATEGIES VEG HARA T, 1988, TRENDS ECOL EVOL, V3, P129 HARPER JL, 1977, POPULATION BIOL PLAN JANZEN DH, 1977, AM J BOT, V64, P347 OBEID M, 1967, CROP SCI, V7, P471 POORTER H, 1991, THESIS U UTRECHT SCHIMPF DJ, 1977, ECOLOGY, V58, P450 SOKAL RR, 1981, BIOMETRY TOLSMA DJ, 1987, J APPL ECOL, V24, P991 TOLSMA DJ, 1987, J ECOL, V75, P755 VANNIEKERK JP, 1976, HAND WEIDINGSVEREN S, V11, P37 VEENENDAAL EM, 1991, ACTA BOT NEERL, V40, P297 VEENENDAAL EM, 1991, THESIS FREE U AMSTER WALLER DM, 1982, AM J BOT, V69, P1470 WULFF RD, 1986, J ECOL, V74, P99Gustav fischer verlagJena</style></notes></record></records></xml>
