Panther Peak

Date: February 24, 2018
Time: 7:15 AM - ??
Organization: Sierra Club
Description: If you're a strong hiker, don't mind hard work, and want to help preserve our beautiful Sonoran desert here's your chance. Our goal will be to eliminate at least one of the patches of this awful plant in a remote, off-trail part of Saguaro National Park (West) that's too rugged for the regular buffelgrass removal crews.
Meeting Location: Carpool meeting place: From I-10 exit Cortaro Road and go west. Approximately ½ mile west of the interstate turn left (southeast) on Arizona Pavillions Drive. Take the next left at the Chipotle Restaurant and the next left immediately after that. Very soon the road curves right. The Starbucks and the small parking lot meeting place are on the left at the curve. It is northeast of the Starbucks, southeast of the Bank of America, southwest of the AT&T store. Carpool meeting place coordinator: Mitch Stevens, 520-991-1199. Please call if there's a problem.
Buffelgrass pull location: Lat: 32.332092 Long: 111.167916
Volunteers: 7 registered out of a total capacity of 15
Tools Provided: Park Service will provide tools and gloves
Bring: Several litters of liquid, protection from the sun (hat and sunscreen), and lunch.
Wear: Sturdy footwear for hiking and working. Long pants and sleeves optional to decrease the chance of getting scratched by vegetation.
Additional Information: Please don't attend unless you have off-trail hiking experience. Stick around after the hike/pull to eat your lunch on a porch at the edge the National Park's wild saguaro desert. Then get a tour of an off-the-grid, solar-electric strawbale house with passive solar heating, earthen plaster walls, and rainwater harvesting for all the home's water needs. The house was built to minimize it's visual impact on the stunning landscape where it sits.
