Fun Facts

• The largest ray in the Gulf of California is the manta ray! They can grow 25 feet wide and weigh up to 3,500 pounds.
• Rays have a sixth sense. Spooky! They have electrical sensors to find food. Located around the stingray’s mouth, these organs sense the natural electrical charges of prey.
• Wiggle your nose! Go ahead. Try it. That’s cartilage. Rays are related to sharks because they have skeletons made of cartilage instead of bone.
• They are quite the social butterflies. This species (Cownose ray) has been known to migrate in groups of thousands!
• Relatives? The Cownose ray belongs to the Family Myliobatidae, which includes bat rays, manta rays and eagle rays.
